I started a readers choice adult fantasy novel last night at about 9:00 P.M. Mountain time. It is now 3:27 A.M. and I have just finished The Silent Land by Graham Joyce. I was expecting a book that was nice and full of fantasy, like, I don’t know, stuff like a fairy and elf’s. Nope not in this book. High in the mountains above a French ski resort, a couple rises a mountain in the early morning to ski the virgin snow. But a fantastic ski run all to soon turns into a nightmare, when they hear a roar and are soon buried under the snow. They are able to dig themselves out against all odds, and shaken, start to slowly move down the mountain. What they don’t know is a much bigger nightmare is waiting to be discovered back at the hotel. This book is hypnotically dark and absolutely eerie. Fantasy? It is a very scary, remote, abandoned, confinement kind of fantasy. And it was fantastically brilliant.
